States are cracking down on ESAs. Just recently, on November 16th, 2021, Florida said they would be making it more difficult to get an ESA. 

And for good reason. There are a lot of companies out there promising ESAs without proper, medical approval. 

Now don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of ethical companies out there doing it right. They take all the necessary steps needed to get you a legal ESA. 

But beware of the fake ones...

Here’s why...

Say you go through with it and get an ESA. Then it turns out the ESA is not legal. As more and more States crack down on ESA laws, what if your fake ESA is sought out and disapproved of by your landlord. Then what happens to you and your pet? 

The worst case scenario is you get kicked out of your living situation and fined for breaking your contract. It’s no joke to use a fake ESA especially when your relationship with your pet is on the line.

Do They Pre-Approve Your Pet?

Although most pets qualify, it’s still a necessary step in an official ESA document. Some businesses will approve any pet and that’s not legal practice.

For an ESA to be official, the pet must be approved. 

In fact, one of Florida’s reasons for raising the alarm on ESAs was because they felt too many different types of pets were being considered ESAs. 

Do They Require Screening By A Real Doctor?

This is important because if you’re not being screened by a REAL doctor, then the ESA is fake and worthless.

Traditionally, you had to go to your doctor to get an ESA. Now, you can be screened through a series of questions that are sent to and approved by a doctor.

Be careful though. Since the process has gone online, it’s easy for companies to lie about whether an actual doctor is reviewing the documents or not.

Which brings us to the last qualification...

Is Your ESA Signed With A Doctor's REAL Registration Number?

This is the icing on the cake. You must make sure that the Doctor's real registration number will be on the official ESA documents. This is PROOF that you were screened by a doctor.

Without it, landlords do not have to obey ESA laws and even worse, can kick you out for living with your pet!
